Farmers To Get Additional Support of ₹6,000 per annum Under 'Namo Shetkari Sanman Yojana'

The Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra is gearing up to introduce a new scheme, 'Namo Shetkari Sanman Yojana' (NSSY), aimed at providing annual financial assistance of ₹6,000 to farmers. The proposal, named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to be presented for approval in the state cabinet meeting on Tuesday, aligning it with the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme which grants farmers ₹6,000 per year as minimum income support. Once approved, farmers in Maharashtra will receive a total of ₹12,000 annually.

The announcement of the NSSY scheme was made by the state's finance minister, Devendra Fadnavis, during the presentation of the budget for the year 2023-24. Under the scheme, the state government will supplement the ₹6,000 provided by the Central government under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, resulting in a total amount of ₹12,000 being deposited into each farmer's account every year. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 11.59 million farmers across the state.

Interestingly, the state government's decision to implement the NSSY scheme comes in the wake of identifying a significant number of technically ineligible beneficiaries who had managed to be included in the list of eligible beneficiaries under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Surprisingly, approximately 1.33 million such beneficiaries have received a total sum of ₹1,554 crore over the past four years, as per data from the state agriculture department. Despite the department's efforts to initiate a recovery process, the desired results were not achieved.

The NSSY scheme aims to rectify any discrepancies and ensure that deserving farmers receive the intended financial assistance. With the impending approval of the NSSY scheme, Maharashtra demonstrates its commitment to enhancing the welfare of its farmers and ensuring they receive adequate financial support.
