According to a report by Bhutan Live, a cohort of young individuals in the Haa district of Bhutan has formed the Nya Chuthang Sanam Detshen farming group in Nobgang, under the Samar Gewog, to move on from being workers to becoming entrepreneurs and owning their businesses.

The youth, fueled by aspirations of achievement, have emerged as 'Torchbearers' for a new generation of farmers within the country, particularly among their peers.

Last year, four individuals in their twenties started working on a farm where they cultivated potatoes on a five-acre property. They received assistance from the district administration to develop the former pastureland for farming purposes.

According to Bhutan Live, Namgay Dorji, founder of Nya Chuthang Sanam Detshen, stated, "All the members of our group have completed their studies up to class 8, 10, or 12. Despite trying various types of work, we have faced numerous failures. Presently, our group consists of only four members, but we have around 15 to 16 young individuals from our village who work with us. We plan to register them as members of our group in the future."

Dorji mentioned that his parents work as farmers, which has sparked his interest in agriculture. Moreover, the local authorities have constructed electric fencing as well as carried out land development.

According to a report by Bhutan Live, the District Agriculture Officer Tashi Wangchuk mentioned that they helped the farmers in converting their property into agricultural land. This assistance included the installation of electric fencing and the provision of seeds at a subsidized rate.

Assuming everything goes as intended, the group intends to not only improve its economic outlook but also increase its workforce by hiring additional young individuals, thereby paving the way for the upcoming generation of farmers.
