Yara India Published Its First India Sustainability Report

Yara India, a subsidiary of the Norwegian multinational Yara International, a leading global crop nutrition company and provider of agricultural, industrial, and environmental solutions, announced the publication of its first India Sustainability Report today. The report outlines Yara's approach to improving the sustainability of its business processes in India, as well as its progress toward change. Through partnerships with over 125 farmer producer organizations (FPOs) across 13 states, Yara India has reached 11.8 million farmers digitally and positively impacted the lives of 68,000 farmers.

The 5C approach to sustainability at Yara is central to the sustainability report: Commit, Channelize, Care, Concern, and Contribute. These pillars are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and they address issues such as greenhouse gas emissions reduction, energy conservation, water stewardship, circularity, and biodiversity. The company devised a strategy to invest in initiatives and programme development that will lower operating costs, increase female workforce participation across the value chain, provide revenue opportunities, and reduce operating risks.

"We are pleased to launch our first India Sustainability Report, which underscores our commitment to sustainable growth and operations in the country and around the world," said Sanjiv Kanwar, Managing Director, Yara South Asia. "Our work allows us to have a long-term impact along the manufacturing and agricultural value chains, while also providing high-tech solutions to the farmers who feed the world. Our teams are also consistently assisting us in this endeavor, and we rely on them for innovative ideas to increase productivity, eliminate waste, and reduce costs. We have reached out to 11.6 million farmers and directly supported 68,000 farmers across 13 states through our initiatives."

The 5Cs Of Yara India

The company is creating and developing solutions to meet farmers' changing needs while minimizing environmental impact.

Commit: 11.6 million farmers reached through online sessions, and partnerships with more than 125 FPOs across 13 states allow Yara India to directly connect with and support approximately 68,000 farmers. Monthly, 0.7-1.0 million farmers visit Yara Crop Nutrition Centres (YCNC).

Channelise: Created opportunities for women in customer-facing roles such as agronomy and sales, as well as agri-entrepreneurs; collaborated with 7 women-only FPOs; and women comprised 50% of the Yara India Advisory Council, which was formed to guide the organization across various strategic business imperatives.

Care: We impacted 65,000 lives through our CSR initiatives, which included special initiatives for people's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Throughout the year, training sessions were attended by 99 percent of full-time employees.

Concern: Measures to reduce scope 1 GHG emissions are being reduced in tandem with a stringent waste segregation and recycling process. The construction of a 600 KLD MBR-based sewage treatment plant for water treatment is currently underway.

Contribute: 1535 people were employed, and 55 small businesses were supported.

"Going forward, Yara has planned to continue to reinforce sustainability reporting practices defining standards that can set the benchmarks for the fertilizer industry in the country and aim to focus on increasing the participation of women in agriculture from within Yara India and outside the wider ecosystem. Yara will continue to strengthen digital farming solutions as part of ongoing efforts to provide more farmers with access to banks of cutting-edge agronomy knowledge. Per the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Yara will work to reduce its carbon footprint by reducing GHG emissions and introducing renewable and greener energy sources such as green ammonia. "Yara India intends to expand its social footprint by contributing more to nation-building and community development," the company said.
