Wheat Crop in Good Condition, Govt’s Wheat Procurement to Be Normal-FCI MD

The wheat crop is in good condition and the government’s procurement would be normal at 300-400 lakh tonne in the 2023-24 marketing year starting March.

On Thursday, FCI Chairman and Managing Director Ashok K Meena said that the wheat crop is in good condition and the government’s procurement would be normal at 300-400 lakh tonne in the 2023-24 marketing year starting March.

In a press conference, Meena said, “Area sown to wheat is higher than last year. The present condition of the wheat crop is better. In 2023-2024, our procurement should be normal at 300-400 lakh tonne.”.

He also added,” The wheat procurement had reduced last year due to less domestic production and more exports.”

When asked about any impact on wheat crops due to the rise in temperature according to the forecast by the Met Department, FCI MD said it is not likely to have any impact and the short-duration crop will not be affected.

In the 2023-24 crop year (July-June), as per the second estimate of the agriculture ministry, the government has projected a record wheat production of 112.18 million tonnes.

As per the official data, Last year in the 2021-2022 marketing year, wheat procurement for the central pool had reduced to 187.92 lakh tonnes from 433.44 lakh tonnes.

Food Corporation of India is the government’s nodal agency that undertakes the procurement and distribution of food grains for the PDS and welfare schemes.

From March 15 onwards, the procurement of wheat will start.
