The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released a new report highlighting the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Indian agriculture sector. According to the report, promoting the extensive use of advanced technologies like AI can revolutionize agriculture and uplift smallholder farmers. The report unveils the success of the 'Saagu Baagu' initiative, which translates to 'agriculture advancement' in the Telugu language, implemented by the Telangana government in collaboration with the WEF.

In the first phase of the 'Saagu Baagu' project, the AI for Agriculture Innovation (AI4AI) initiative assisted more than 7,000 chili farmers in gaining access to agritech services. These services, including AI-based advisories, soil testing, e-commerce, and produce quality testing, are currently in the pilot stage. The Telangana government plans to scale up these agritech services in the second phase, extending them to 20,000 chili and groundnut farmers in three districts starting this year. Additionally, digital public infrastructure will be introduced in the second phase. The project's ultimate goal, set for phase three, is to reach 100,000 farmers in the state by 2025.

Originally launched in 2022 by Digital Green, in association with three agritech startups and with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the 'Saagu Baagu' project is now positioned by the WEF as a potential playbook for governments seeking to implement local agritech ecosystems and empower smallholder farmers.

The WEF pointed out that while these advanced technologies hold significant potential to enhance productivity and sustainability in agriculture, they often face obstacles such as fragmented technological infrastructure, high operational costs, limited data accessibility, and a lack of technical expertise. Addressing these challenges, the AI4AI initiative becomes central to the success of the 'Saagu Baagu' project.

The WEF commended the project for its focus on transforming the agriculture value chain by enabling flexible delivery of agritech services to customers, backed by administrative and policy support and digital public infrastructure, including 'Agriculture Data Exchange' and 'Agritech Sandbox'.

Purushottam Kaushik, Head of the WEF’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in India, emphasized the need for governments to play an enabling role and explore non-financial yet high-impact approaches to scaling agritech services. He also stressed the significance of focusing on value chains to ensure targeted and outcome-oriented efforts.

The success of the 'Saagu Baagu' initiative highlights the tremendous potential of AI and other advanced technologies to drive positive change in India's agriculture sector. As the world faces mounting challenges related to climate change and food security, embracing sustainable practices and innovative solutions becomes increasingly crucial for the industry. Agriculture's evolution into a dynamic arena now offers investment opportunities and promising solutions, attracting tech-savvy and entrepreneurial minds eager to contribute to its transformation.
