Weather Impact: Crops in Many Parts of Telangana Damaged by Unseasonal Rain and Hail
Crops in paddy fields were also flattened by unseasonal rains, gales, and hailstorms that hit eight mandals in Mahabubabad district.
Throughout Friday and Saturday, numerous regions of Mahabubabad and Jangaon districts were hammered by heavy downpour, accompanied by strong gusts of wind and hailstorms.
Over the weekend, extreme rain in the Hanamkonda and Warangal districts caused damage to both standing crops and paddy held at paddy procurement centers. As a result, farmers suffered significant losses, as the paddy was nearly ready for harvesting in several areas.
These losses were exacerbated by the fact that farmers had previously predicted a low output due to multiple pest and bug infestations throughout the Yasangi season.
Crops in paddy fields were also flattened by unseasonal rains, gales, and hailstorms that hit eight mandals in Mahabubabad district.
According to a statement issued by Mahabubabad District Collector K Shashanka, the torrential rainfall on Friday night damaged crops in the district to an estimated extent of 11,621 acres.
Crops on 21,559 acres of land in the Jangaon district were damaged by heavy rains. The damage was severe in three mandals: Bachannapet, Jangaon, and Raghunathpally, where paddy, maize, mango, and other crops were destroyed. The extent of damage was the highest for paddy, affecting 20,320 acres, while mango crops were impacted on 1,232 acres. According to preliminary estimates, the hailstorm and torrential rainfall harmed around 9,827 farmers in 42 communities.
The District Collector, Ch Shivalingaiah, along with officials from the revenue and agriculture departments, among others, paid a visit to the villages of Peddapahad and Vadlakonda to review the current situation.
Crops on 85,670 acres belonging to 74,797 farmers in the erstwhile Warangal district were damaged by unexpected rainfall and hailstorms in March 2023. Recently, the State government provided compensation of Rs.85.67 crore to these farmers for their losses.
According to preliminary estimates, the paddy crop in several villages in Karimnagar rural mandal, including Chamanpalli, Cherlabuthkur, Muqdumpur, and Jublinagar, has been completely devastated, affecting an area of somewhat more than 5,000 acres. Furthermore, hailstorms have caused substantial damage to countless mango orchards during the summer season, shattering mango producers' expectations for a lucrative output.
