In a groundbreaking effort to transform the lives of Indian farmers, the Walmart Foundation has continued its unwavering commitment to rural development and gender equality through its Market Access Program. Since 2018, the Foundation has invested over $39 million in India, with a primary focus on reaching 500 Farmer Producer Organizations/Farmer Producer Groups and benefiting approximately 800,000 farmers, over half of whom are women.

Collaborating with notable NGOs, such as PRADAN, ACCESS, Mercy Corps, and Srijan, the Walmart Foundation's Market Access Program is making a substantial difference at the grassroots level. These organizations work closely with farmers in nine states across India, including Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, and Maharashtra, enabling smallholder farmers to access global markets and improving their livelihoods.

In March 2023, the Walmart Foundation unveiled an ambitious five-year strategy that aims to reach one million smallholder farmers in India by 2028. Significantly, the foundation has set a benchmark that at least 50% of the beneficiaries will be women, recognizing the pivotal role they play in agriculture and the rural economy.
