Recently Trichy has seen a slight decline in black gram production due to rapid changes in weather compared to the previous years. The Department of Agriculture has attempted to increase pulses production.

According to reports, there has been a decline in the production of black gram. The production has decreased from 16,500 acres to 18,500 acres. Due to this reason farmers from Manikandam and Lalgudi have shifted to cultivate sesame.

From further reports, it has been found that the transportation of crude sunflower oil is being exported to India from Ukraine and Russia.

According to the Joint director of the agriculture department, Trichy M Murugesan farmers from the Lalgudi block have shifted to sesame cultivation, and even farmers from the rain-fed area have opted for it. The area which it will cover is not less than 500 acres.

As Tamil Nadu University has developed VBN 8, farmers are very satisfied with its yield. Infact 60% of farmers have opted for this hybrid variety, according to officials.

Farmers are also starting to favor VBN 11 since it produces more than VBN 8 does. Progressive farmer M. Saravanan regretted that the department's seed distribution during the current season caused farmers from the Sirrugamani area to suffer losses.

He also added that they were being tricked. The seeds they obtained from the agriculture extension center were not VBN 8. The seeds they bought only yielded 600 kg per acre. Joint Director of Agriculture M Murugesan said he will definitely inspect this issue.
