Shocking: Solapur Farmer Earns Only Rs 2 On Sale Of 512 kg Onions
The 63-year-old farmer, Rajendra Chavan of the Barshi tehsil, revealed in the Solapur market yard that his crop of onions brought in Rs 1 per kg.
When a farmer from Solapur in Maharashtra discovered that he had only made a profit of Rs. 2.49 from selling his 512 kg of onions to a local dealer, he was in for an unpleasant awakening.
The 63-year-old farmer, Rajendra Chavan of the Barshi tehsil, revealed in the Solapur market yard that his crop of onions brought in Rs 1 per kg. After all deductions, he received this meager sum as his net pay the previous week. In remarks to PTI, Chavan stated, "I had supplied a Solapur onion trader ten bags of onions totaling more than five quintals. Yet after subtracting costs for labor, transportation, loading, and other expenses, I only got a net profit of Rs 2.49 from him."
"The seller gave me a price of Rs 100 per quintal. The crop was 512 kg in total, and he received Rs 512 in total payment for the harvest " he added.
According to him, the harmed farmers must receive compensation and the onion producers must receive a fair price for their harvest.
The image of the receipt and cheque given to Chavan has gone viral on social media, with many people expressing outrage at the trader's treatment of the farmer.
Raju Shetty, the leader of the Swabhimani Farmers Association and a former MP, has also expressed his outrage and demanded that those responsible be held accountable. The incident has brought to light the precarious situation of farmers in India, who are frequently at the mercy of middlemen and traders.
