On Tuesday, Sukhbir Singh Badal, the chief of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), urged for the prompt disbursal of compensation worth Rs 50,000 per acre to farmers whose wheat crops were ruined by unforeseen rain and hailstorms.

In several parts of Punjab, wheat and other crops have suffered damage due to unexpected rains, hailstorms, and strong winds. Chief Badal has expressed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had assured farmers of compensation right after crop damage, following the 'Delhi Model'. Therefore, the AAP government should fulfill its promise and avoid postponing the assessment process, as it did last year, which resulted in farmers being denied relief.

"The total destruction of the wheat crop in nearly half of the state is visible to all. It has also been confirmed by agricultural experts," Badal said in a statement issued here. "What did he (Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann) have to wait for?" Badal inquired.

"Farmers have not received compensation for damage done to wheat and cotton crops last year," he added. Badal stated that if farmers are treated unfairly, the SAD will launch an agitation.

He insisted on increasing the compensation for farm labourers to Rs 10,000 per acre and considering the losses incurred by leaseholders. Badal also urged the AAP government to promptly address the issue of value cuts that farmers are apprehensive about being imposed on their wheat harvest by the central government.

Badal suggested that the central government should refrain from implementing any deductions in the value of grains, specifically in cases where the grains exhibit excess moisture or discoloration, considering the unique circumstances.
