Rupala: India's Fish Production Hits Record High of 162.48 Lakh Tonnes in 2021-22
India's annual fish production has soared from a modest 7.5 lakh tonnes in 1950-51 to an impressive 162.48 lakh tonnes in 2021-22. Notably, there was a remarkable growth rate of 10.34% in fish production during 2021-22 as compared to the previous year, 2020-21.
Parshottam Rupala, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, stated that the fisheries sector in India has experienced significant growth and now plays a vital role in the nation's socio-economic development. The sector has evolved into a thriving commercial enterprise, witnessing a remarkable 22-fold increase in fish production over the past 75 years since independence.

During the conclusion of the 5th phase of the Sagar Parikrama Yatra in Goa, Rupala stated that India ranks as the third largest fish-producing country, contributing approximately 8 percent to global fish production. Furthermore, India holds the second position in aquaculture production and is recognized as one of the leading nations in shrimp cultivation worldwide.
The minister emphasized that India possesses abundant and varied fisheries resources, resulting in the production of a wide range of fish.

Fish, being an affordable and nutrient-rich source of animal protein and omega-3 fatty acids, holds great promise in addressing hunger and malnutrition. This sector not only offers livelihoods and employment to over 28 million fishers and fish farmers at the grassroots level, but also provides opportunities for entrepreneurship along the entire value chain.
The inland fish production in 2000-01 was only 28.23 lakh tonnes per annum. However, by 2021-22, it reached an impressive 121.21 lakh tonnes per annum, representing a remarkable 400% increase. Notably, the inland fisheries and aquaculture production of the country has nearly doubled since 2014.

The noteworthy advancements in breeding technologies owe their success to the invaluable input of fisheries scientists, particularly those associated with ICAR institutes. These achievements have been made possible through the combined dedication of the central and state governments, as well as the relentless efforts of fishers, fish farmers, and entrepreneurs.
"Sagar Parikrama" is a coastal voyage across India, commemorating the 75th year of India's independence and expressing solidarity with the fishing community, fish farmers, and other stakeholders. This government initiative tackles the obstacles encountered by the fishing community and fosters their economic progress through initiatives such as PMMSY and KCC. The journey pays tribute to freedom fighters, sailors, and fishermen, with the goal of addressing their concerns, resolving issues, and promoting their well-being.
