An amount of almost Rs 24 crore that was allocated by the state government to compensate farmers whose crops were damaged last year has been sent back to the state headquarters. Official sources stated that the amount could not be distributed among affected farmers before the end of the last financial year, which was March 31, 2023.

The local administration is now trying to retrieve the relief amount so that it can be given to farmers. However, the district unit of the All-India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) staged a protest in Rohtak on Wednesday, demanding that the compensation for last year’s crop damage be released.

According to AIKS state general secretary Sumit Dalal, farmers were not receiving insurance compensation for losses incurred during the Kharif-2022 and rabi-2023 crops since they had not been uploaded on the government portal. The Kisan Sabha has opposed the conditions of online registration and other procedures for granting crop-loss relief and has demanded that the compensation be paid to affected farmers unconditionally.

District Revenue Officer (DRO) Chander Mohan admitted that an amount of nearly Rs 24 crore, provided by the state government for granting crop-loss relief to affected farmers of Rohtak district last year, had been sent back since it could not be utilized until the end of the last financial year. He added that the amount could not be distributed due to certain technical reasons and that efforts were being made to retrieve the said amount and distribute it among affected farmers.

Meanwhile, Rohtak DC Ajay Kumar warned farmers of fraudsters who claimed crop-loss compensation by registering their mobile phone numbers and account details on the e-kshatipurti portal, along with the land details of farmers whose crops had been damaged. He advised farmers to register their complaints at the local SDM/Tehsildar’s office if they were defrauded.
