‘Rail Roko’- Movement of Trains Disrupt in Punjab Due to Farmers’ Protest

The 'Rail Roko' protest was started in support of many demands, such as fair compensation for the possession of land for road projects and clearing unsettled sugarcane dues.

On Wednesday, the movement of several trains took a hit in Punjab due to a ‘Rail Roko’ protest called by the farmers’ body KMSC. This protest was started in support of many demands, such as fair compensation for the possession of land for road projects and clearing unsettled sugarcane dues.

Called by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee the protest was at the Gurdaspur Railway Station.

According to Railway officials, 10 trains, including the ones from Pathankot to Amritsar and Verka to Pathankot, were cancelled due to the disturbance.

The officials added, apart from this, six trains from Amritsar to Pathankot, Pathankot to Verka, and Pathankot to Old Delhi were shortly terminated at Amritsar, Dinanagar, and Dhariwal.

At least four trains were averted via Pathankot-Mukerian-Jalandhar Cantt, Jalandhar City, Pathankot-Mukerian-Jalandhar City, and Mukerian-Pathankot.

Sarwan Singh Pandher, the KMSC general secretary said that they were demanding legitimate compensation for the land obtained for road projects.

There were other demands, which included the unsettled payment of sugarcane, well-paid and lucrative prices for crops as per the Swaminathan Commission report, and farm debt.
