‘Rail Roko’– Angry Farmers To Block Trains Tomorrow
Farmer leaders have accused the state government of purposefully delaying the evaluation of wheat harvest losses caused by late rain. The state government had already promised that it will compensate farmers for agricultural losses caused by Baisakhi.
Recently, leaders of 32 farmer unions affiliated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) from Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts met to plan for the April 18 'rail roko' protest.
The SKM has declared that it will shut down rail traffic on April 18 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to protest the Centre's price drop for shrivelled or cracked wheat grain procurement during the current season. The government has also announced a value reduction for lustre loss.
Farmer leaders also accused the state government of purposefully delaying the evaluation of wheat harvest losses caused by late rain. The state government had already promised that it will compensate farmers for agricultural losses caused by Baisakhi.
According to farmer leaders, wheat harvesting has already begun, but tax department personnel who were scheduled to undertake loss assessments have yet to arrive in villages.
"How will the government conduct girdawari if the crop has already been harvested?" asked Jatinder Singh Chinna of the Kirti Kisan Union. The government is plainly avoiding paying reparations."
According to Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala of the Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, "thousands of farmers will participate in the 'rail roko' agitation on April 18 to protest against the government."
Among those present were farmer leaders Lakhbir Singh Nizampura, Bhupinder Singh Takhatmal, Balbir Singh Jhamka, Dhanwant Singh Khatrai Kalan, Baldev Singh Bal, Amar Singh, and Prahlad Singh.
