The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in Punjab's Gurdaspur district has launched a 15-page monthly digital newspaper, 'Uttam Kheti,' to educate farmers on new agricultural methods and provide expert advice.

Dr. Amrik Singh, the chief editor of 'Uttam Kheti' Newspaper, stated that the publication focuses on agricultural extension services (also known as agricultural advisory services), which play an important role in increasing agricultural productivity, increasing food security, improving rural livelihoods, and promoting agriculture as a pro-poor economic growth engine.

In the presence of chief editor Dr. Amrik Singh, Gurdaspur chief agriculture officer Dr. Kripal Singh, and agriculture officer Harbhinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Gurdaspur Dr. Himanshu Agarwal released the first edition of 'Uttam Kheti' at his office on Friday.

The newspaper will publish monthly agricultural trends, stories of successful farmers, and advisories issued by agricultural experts regularly. It will also include sections on crop diseases, as well as related precautions and treatments.

The newspaper will also include contact information for agricultural experts in the districts, allowing farmers to reach out to them in times of need.

According to Dr. Himanshu Agarwal, digital platforms are important in today's technological era because they can quickly spread new agricultural techniques to more farmers. He stated that young farmers have made significant contributions to propelling the industry forward. "In this digital age, most farmers use social media, and this digital initiative of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare can assist in passing on valuable information on agricultural topics to the grassroots level," said the officer.

He also stated that through this initiative, farmers will be able to learn about the best cultivation techniques, timing, and available agricultural aids for various crops ahead of time. Aside from that, farmers will be educated on the harmful effects of burning residue in the fields, the importance of timely soil testing, and the use of appropriate amounts of fertilizer and pesticides, among other things.
