Punjab Agriculture University Hosts Asia's First Agricultural Museums Congress

In a collaborative effort with the Heritage Foundation, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) recently played host to the two-day Congress organized by the International Association of Agricultural Museums (CIMA) on Monday. The event saw the distinguished presence of Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush, a celebrated recipient of the World Food Prize, who graced the opening ceremony as the chief guest.

Dr. Khush lauded PAU for its pivotal role in organizing Asia's leading agricultural museums conference, underscoring the steadfast commitment of Punjab's farmers and scientists in upholding food security and revitalizing the agricultural sector.

He specifically commended PAU's museums, hailing them as a homage to the abundant agricultural heritage and culture of the state. He acknowledged these museums as repositories of knowledge and complete dedication from the farming community, underlining how agriculture has played a transformative role in human history by uniting societies and fostering the advancement of civilization.

He also said that these museums serve as ideal platforms for preserving and showcasing diverse agricultural practices, tools, irrigation techniques, and crop cultivation methods across generations. They not only facilitate research and collaboration but also pave the way for innovative farming practices in the future.

PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal hailed the event as a significant milestone in promoting the cultural essence of agriculture. He emphasized the vital role of agriculture in Punjab's culture and highlighted that the university's museums encapsulate the intricate relationship between ecosystems, land, water, seeds, fertilizers, and sustainability.

Professor Debra Reid, serving as the curator for Agriculture and Environment at the Henry Ford Museum in the United States, emphasized the significance of the congress in India. She recognized the nation's increasing prominence in agriculture and noted the shift in the congress's emphasis, transitioning from predominantly European perspectives to a more pronounced Indian viewpoint, mirroring the evolving landscape of agriculture worldwide.
