Punjab Agri University Squad Evaluates Surface Seeding-Cum-Mulching Technology In Wheat Fields From Six Districts
Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, the Vice-Chancellor of PAU, recently headed a team that visited six districts in Punjab, namely Moga, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar, to evaluate the efficacy of the surface seeding-cum-mulching technique in wheat farming.
According to a press statement released by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), the recent heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds have caused significant harm to wheat crops in various regions of Punjab. However, the farmers who had implemented the surface seeding-cum-mulching technique suggested by PAU suffered fewer damages from adverse weather conditions.
Accompanied by KVK/FASC personnel in each district, Dr. Makhan Singh Bhullar, the agronomy department head, Dr. Dhanwinder Singh, the soil science department head, and agronomist Dr. Jasvir Singh Gill conducted on-site inspections in the fields, according to the statement. They collected micro-level observations during their visit.
During their visit to Saleena in Moga, the team had the opportunity to witness the remarkable results of Tarsem Singh's implementation of this technology on his five-acre field. The crops stood strong and tall without any lodging, indicating a successful harvest.
According to a statement by the Department of Agriculture and KVK in Moga, other technology adopters in the region have also noted comparable outcomes, even under harsh weather conditions.
Gosal concluded that the surface seeding-cum-mulching technology used for crops resulted in several benefits. Firstly, the crops did not collapse or lodge except in one instance. Secondly, it saved one irrigation and reduced the amount of herbicidal spray required because of the dense mulch. This method is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly and water-efficient. Furthermore, it promotes early crop emergence and minimizes weed infestation.
Gosal strongly advised farmers to adopt this simple approach as retaining residue in situ continuously improves soil health and crop yield, in addition to being a safe way of managing paddy residue.
