Protesting Farmers & Villagers Blocked Road In Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, Prompting Police To Lathi Charge
The Bengaluru-Mysuru motorway was congested on Monday as protesting farmers and villagers blocked the road near Hanakere in Mandya to demand the construction of an underpass closer to the village. To disperse the crowd and clear the road, police had to resort to lathi-charge.

Farmers and residents of a village near Hanakere in Mandya blocked the road on the newly built Mysuru-Bengaluru motorway for more than two hours on Monday to demand a closer underpass. The e-traffic way's flow was disrupted, and police had to resort to lathi charges to disperse the enraged crowd.
Protesters parked their tractors, bullock carts, and livestock on both sides of the road to express their outrage at the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The protesters have also learned that they will not allow the vehicles to operate until the underpass near the village is completed.
Long lines of vehicles piled up and remained stranded on the motorway for more than two kilometers. Commuters were tremendously inconvenienced because they could not return or commute on the service road.
The road was later cleared by police, and vehicular traffic was restored. Initially, cops arrived on the scene and appealed to the agitators to end their protest; however, after some time, heated arguments erupted between the protesters and the police, as the protesters were adamant about continuing the protest until evening.
After that, the police made alternative plans and diverted the vehicles near Maddur and Mandya.
The villagers claim that the underpass was built on the outskirts of Hanakere village and is useless to them, and they have demanded that an underpass be built closer to the village. Residents in five to six villages have been affected.
However, the highway authorities have ignored repeated complaints, and the motorway construction is nearing completion. NHAI officials also went to the protest site and urged them to end their protest. The police have arrested two farmer leaders, S C Madhuchandan and Prasanna Gowda.
