PM Modi Makes Sustainable Fashion Statement at G7 Summit, Wears Jacket of Recycled Material
PM Modi's fashion statement at the G7 Summit serves as a reminder that sustainable practices can be integrated into every aspect of our lives, including fashion, contributing to a greener and healthier planet for future generations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a powerful statement on sustainability during the G7 Summit by donning a jacket made from recycled materials. The move highlights the importance of promoting eco-friendly practices and reducing waste in the fashion industry.
PM Modi's fashion statement at the G7 Summit serves as a reminder that sustainable practices can be integrated into every aspect of our lives, including fashion, contributing to a greener and healthier planet for future generations.
The jacket was crafted from recycled fabric, which is produced by collecting used PET bottles, crushing and melting them, and then adding colour to create yarn. This innovative process significantly reduces emissions at various production levels, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion choice.
During a session on "Working Together to Address Multiple Crises" at the G7 Summit, PM Modi emphasized the need for a holistic approach to natural resource utilization and a shift in the development model inspired by consumerism.
"I believe that the development model should facilitate progress for developing countries, rather than hinder it," PM Modi stated. He stressed the importance of adopting a new model of natural farming as an alternative to conventional fertilizer-based practices worldwide.
At the Quad Summit held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, PM Modi drew attention to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which underscores the urgent need for rapid and far-reaching transitions in all sectors and systems.
In a joint statement, the Quad countries stated, "As we move toward a net-zero world, it is crucial to strengthen our cooperation to ensure better access to affordable, reliable, and secure clean energy in the Indo-Pacific region."
They further announced the initiation of the Clean Energy Supply Chains initiative, designed to accelerate the transition to clean energy in the Indo-Pacific. The initiative aims to facilitate research and development projects, feasibility studies, and technology advancements to reduce costs, enhance regional energy security, and diversify the production of necessary materials and technologies.
Furthermore, PM Modi highlighted the significance of leveraging digital technology to benefit farmers globally. He emphasized the importance of separating organic food from mere fashion statements and commercialization and connecting it with nutrition and health.
It is worth noting that this is not the first instance of PM Modi wearing a jacket made from recycled plastic bottles. Previously, he wore a sleeveless sky-blue Nehru jacket, gifted to him by the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), which was made using recycled materials.
PM Modi's sustainable fashion choices align with India's green growth and energy transition commitment. At the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021, he pledged to achieve various ambitious targets, including reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, reducing emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030, and aiming for net-zero emissions by 2070.
India's ban on several single-use plastics since July 2022 further exemplifies its commitment to environmental protection and waste reduction.
