Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the successful outcomes of two agricultural initiatives, namely vegetable cultivation and poultry farming, implemented in the Lakshadweep islands as part of the 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) campaign. The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm demonstrated by the people of Lakshadweep in adopting new practices and acquiring knowledge.

 

Prime Minister conveyed his appreciation message through the Twitter platform. In response to the tweet posted by the Administrator of the Union Territory of Lakshwadeep, Praful K Patel on successful results from the program ‘Nutri Garden Project’ which was initiated in 2022 in Lakshwadeep island, resulted in excellent results. 

 

PM Modi in his tweet mentioned and appreciated the hard work and effortless work shown by people. He tweeted “ Great effort, excellent result! This initiative has shown how enthusiastic the people of Lakshadweep are about learning and adopting new things.”

 

According to the administration, it has also been conveyed that Narendra Modi has given hope and has shifted the vision towards increasing farm business, access to nutrition and nutritional security, empowering women, and Mission Life for Environment.

To achieve self-sufficiency in vegetable production and supply, the government distributed chili, amaranthus seeds, okra, tomato, brinjal, grow bags, and organic fertilizers to 1,000 selected farmers from various islands. Additionally, more than 8,000 fruit saplings of different varieties such as papaya, banana, guava, lemon, sapota, and amla, as well as spice saplings, were provided to the farmers.

 

The results of these initiatives have been highly positive. The availability of fresh vegetables in Lakshadweep has increased, ensuring better nutrition for the local population. The programs have been immensely successful, leading to a rise in the supply of fresh vegetables and fruits to the islanders while guaranteeing income for the farmers. Due to its success, the scheme is being expanded further, as stated by the administration.

The Lakshadweep administration also shared details of the Backyard Poultry Rearing Scheme, which has benefited over 600 low-income families. As part of this scheme, these families received more than 7,000 country breed chicks, including breeds like Kadaknath and Kaveri, along with training on poultry rearing techniques.

 

This program has not only empowered women, who are actively involved in its implementation but also provided them with financial savings and new avenues for generating income. The scheme has resulted in additional income for families, empowerment of women, and improved nutritional intake for the local population, told to the release. The women beneficiaries expressed their gratitude and happiness, extending their thanks to the Prime Minister and the administration for implementing such initiatives that contribute to India's development and the welfare of its citizens.
