Piyush Goyal: Utilize Modern Technology For Food Grain Management
Union Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal

Union Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of using modern technologies in foodgrain management and quality control to increase transparency while minimizing human interaction on Monday.

According to the press release, He also instructed FCI officers to use their knowledge of foodgrain management to recommend a better godown design that would allow for higher capacities to be achieved on a small amount of land.

He requested ideas from every officer on how to improve the Food Corporation of India's operations and bring them up to date.

He instructed FCI to open more procurement centers, covering almost all revenue districts while reviewing wheat and paddy procurement issues so that farmers could sell their produce to FCI or any other agency. To increase transparency in the system for buying produce from farmers, he praised the use of E-POP machines at purchase centers in Uttar Pradesh and recommended that other states adopt the same system.

The Union Minister commanded that more Wheat be offered in the Open Market Sale Scheme in order to control the market price of Wheat to take into account the demand, population, and vast geographic area of Uttar Pradesh.

Goyal noted that all FCI godowns, both owned and hired, should be of the highest quality while examining the state's storage capabilities. All godowns that are in bad shape should be upgraded right away by making the necessary repairs, or else they should be dehired.

On January 25, the government announced that the FCI would offload 30 lakh tonnes of wheat from the central pool in the markets under the Open Market Sale Scheme within the next two months to help control rising domestic wheat prices.

Through the open market sale last week, the Food Corporation of India offered 22 lakh tonnes of wheat out of the 25 lakh tonnes earmarked in the first e-auction.

The next wheat open market sale scheme e-auction will take place across states on Wednesday. The e-auction will be held every Wednesday throughout the country until the second week of March 2023.
