OSD, Department of Fisheries Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi Visits ICAR-NBFGR at Lucknow

The institute's primary tasks include the collecting, characterisation, categorization, and documentation of fish genetic resources from various aquatic environments in India, as well as the development of conservation methods.

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, OSD of the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, recently visited the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. During his visit, he met with fish farmers at the institute's farms and the Director of ICAR-NBFGR provided an overview of the institute's research and development efforts.

The institute's primary tasks include the collecting, characterisation, categorization, and documentation of fish genetic resources from various aquatic environments in India, as well as the development of conservation methods.

In addition, the institute conducts research on the introduction of exotics and quarantine measures for the prevention of transboundary illnesses. It also oversees the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD), which involves 31 health laboratories across the country.

During the visit, officers from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Uttar Pradesh, gave a detailed presentation on the potential and scope of inland fishing in the state. Dr. Likhi stressed the need for ICAR-NBFGR and the Uttar Pradesh government to raise awareness among fish farmers about different programmes, activities, and related subsidies available to them through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

Later, Dr. Likhi visited a fish farm in Village Mishripur, Block Deva, Barabanki, where he spoke with the fish farmers. The visit provided an opportunity for farmers to interact with Dr. Likhi and learn about the latest developments in fish farming and conservation methods. The visit was an important step towards promoting sustainable fish farming practices and ensuring the conservation of fish genetic resources in India.
