Nestlé Launches New Research Institute to Advance Sustainable Food Systems
As the pressure on global food systems increases, there is an urgent demand for the adoption of new approaches that can ensure a sustainable food supply for a rapidly growing world population, while also supporting the livelihoods of farmers.
The Institute of Agricultural Sciences, established by Nestlé, has been officially inaugurated. The primary objective of this institute is to promote sustainable food systems by providing agriculture-based solutions backed by scientific research.
Speaking at the inauguration, Paul Bulcke, Nestlé Chairman, stated, "We have developed longstanding relationships with farmers from various parts of the world, and to continue offering delicious, healthy, and affordable food, it's crucial that we work together to create a more sustainable food system. With the establishment of this new institute, we will enhance our knowledge and leverage our extensive global network to assist farming communities and safeguard the environment."
As the pressure on global food systems increases, there is an urgent demand for the adoption of new approaches that can ensure a sustainable food supply for a rapidly growing world population, while also supporting the livelihoods of farmers.
To meet this challenge, Nestlé has established a new institute where its experts will identify and develop solutions in critical areas of focus, including plant science, agricultural systems, and dairy livestock. Through this initiative, Nestlé aims to accelerate progress towards a more sustainable and resilient food system.
Nestlé is currently enhancing its knowledge and expertise in agriculture and extending it to cover additional crops such as pulses and grains. The institute is also collaborating with farmers to conduct experiments on regenerative agriculture methods that aim to enhance soil health and foster diversity of flora and fauna. Furthermore, specialists are researching innovative techniques in dairy farming that has the potential to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by focusing on cow feed and manure management.
Jeroen Dijkman, Head of the Nestlé Institute of Agricultural Sciences, stated, “Our objective is to determine the most favorable methods for enhancing the production of nutrient-rich raw materials while simultaneously mitigating their environmental impact. Our analysis encompasses a comprehensive approach that considers a variety of factors, such as their effect on crop yield, carbon emissions, food safety, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, we evaluate the feasibility of scaling up these methods to ensure their long-term sustainability.”
The institute, which operates under Nestlé's global R&D network, engages in close collaboration with a variety of external partners, including farmers, universities, research organizations, startups, and industry partners, to evaluate and create science-based solutions. By establishing this new institute, Nestlé is demonstrating its continued dedication to enhancing Switzerland's exceptional innovation ecosystem.
The Nestlé Research Institute has expanded its facilities in Switzerland and also includes an already existing plant science research unit located in France. Moreover, the institute operates farms situated in Ecuador, Côte d'Ivoire, and Thailand, along with collaborating with other research farms through partnerships.
