During a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the Madhya Pradesh government will launch the ‘State Millet Mission Scheme’ across all districts for two years. This initiative aims to promote millet cultivation in the state and increase the production of these nutrient-rich grains.

According to an official, the government has planned to execute the "Millet Mission scheme” through the Department of Farmers' Welfare and Agriculture in all districts for a duration of two years. The scheme is allocated a total budget of Rs 23.25 crore, covering the fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25.

According to an official, a new initiative has been launched to provide farmers with high-quality, certified millet seeds through seed cooperatives and government institutions, with an 80% subsidy.

A committee will be set up under the supervision of the state's agriculture production commissioner to oversee the implementation of the project.

To promote the cultivation, processing, and marketing of millets, a scheme will be publicized on a larger scale. This initiative will include training for farmers through study tours, as well as the organization of fairs, workshops, seminars, food festivals, and road shows to further promote millet production.

The government official stated that millets are being promoted due to their high nutritional value and their significance in the country's food culture.

The state cabinet has made some noteworthy decisions to promote the use of millet in government programs. As per the new regulation, every government-sponsored lunch or dinner will include at least one dish made of millet. Similarly, hostels and midday meals will also offer dishes made of millet once a week.

This step is taken to encourage the consumption of millet, which is rich in nutrients and have numerous health benefits.

Another significant development that has taken place is the inclusion of transgenders in the Backward Class category. This decision will allow transgenders to enjoy all the privileges and benefits that are offered to the Backward Classes.

The government's decision to uplift and empower the transgender community is commendable and a step towards promoting inclusivity and equality in society.
