Mocha: Storm Forming in Southeast Bay of Bengal, Likely to Intensify into a Severe Cyclone
IMD has warned fishermen of squally weather in the southeast Bay of Bengal, with windspeeds reaching 40-50 kmph from today onwards. The weather office has also recommended regulating tourism, offshore activities, and shipping near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 8 and 12.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Saturday that a cyclonic circulation had formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal, which could develop into a severe cyclonic storm next week. The formation of the cyclonic circulation is considered the first step in the possible development of a severe cyclonic storm in the region.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region by May 8 due to the cyclonic circulation's influence. IMD will provide details about the path and intensification of the low-pressure area once it has formed.

Mohapatra noted that the weather system is likely to concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 9 and intensify into a cyclonic storm, moving nearly northward towards the central Bay of Bengal. Yemen suggested the name Mocha (Mokha) for the cyclone after the Red Sea port city that introduced coffee to the world over 500 years ago.
