Ministry of Defence and FSSAI Sign MoU to Promote Millets & Healthy Eating Practices in Armed Forces
The collaboration between MoD and FSSAI will also encompass training programs for food handlers and chefs of messes, canteens, and other food outlets, emphasizing food safety and hygiene in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
In a major development to ensure the availability of safe and nutritious food while promoting healthy eating practices among the armed forces, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU, signed in the presence of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, aims to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of diet diversity and millet-based food products among personnel.
The agreement was formalized by Lt. Gen. Preet Mohindera Singh, Director General (Supplies and Transport) representing the Ministry of Defence (MoD), and Ms Inoshi Sharma, Executive Director of FSSAI. Under the MoU, millet-based menus will be introduced in messes, canteens, and other food outlets within the armed forces. This initiative seeks to promote the consumption of millets, also known as Shree Anna, and highlight their health benefits.
The collaboration between MoD and FSSAI will also encompass training programs for food handlers and chefs of messes, canteens, and other food outlets, emphasizing food safety and hygiene in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. This joint effort demonstrates a shared commitment to the health and well-being of the armed forces, enabling them to remain strong and resilient in their service to the nation. Furthermore, the MoU aims to encourage the armed forces' families and the wider community to adopt nutritious diets, make healthier food choices, and prioritize food safety.

To support this endeavor, FSSAI has developed a comprehensive book titled 'Healthy Recipes for Defence,' featuring a range of millet-based dishes. This valuable resource will be made available to various canteens and food outlets operating under the MoD. Given the challenging terrains and diverse climatic conditions faced by the defence personnel, the importance of dietary variety cannot be overstated. Millets, known for their nutritional value, can contribute significantly to a well-balanced and diverse diet.
The event witnessed the presence of Chief of Defence Staff & Secretary, Dept of Military Affairs General Anil Chauhan, Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane, Union Health Secretary Shri Rajesh Bhushan, CEO of FSSAI Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, and other senior officials from the MoD and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
This collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and FSSAI marks a significant step towards enhancing the nutrition and dietary practices within the armed forces. By incorporating millets into their menus and promoting healthy eating habits, the armed forces and their families will enjoy the numerous health benefits provided by these nutritious grains.
