Mann Govt Announces MSP for Basmati Rice

In the recent meeting held in Punjab, Ludhiana, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann Singh announced MSP for Basmati. Through this, farmers can sell their produce at their responsibility. According to the current MSP, a farmer can sell their Paddy worth Rs 57,680 to Rs 74,160 per acre depending on the yield. For Basmati rice, a farmer can sell their yield at current prevailing market rates of Rs 64,000 to Rs 1 Lac even on low productivity.

In the recent meeting, it has been set forth that government will take substantial steps to boost the economy and export system. The government will also try to introduce certain other methods which will evade the practice of cultivating long-sown crops, requiring more amount of water for their ultimate growth.

The senior officer from the Department Of Agriculture has also mentioned that the government has decided on MSP for basmati at a rate of 2,625 per quintal. Also as private entities are the major players for effective profits through trading, exports huge focus should be attained. It has been analyzed that in previous reports the rate got fluctuated from Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,200 per quintal due to which farmers had to face deprivations.

Senior Agriculture Officer also marked that “Now, the government has decided that if the rate of basmati in the open market comes down from the decided MSP, then the state government will get it procured at the said MSP through MARKFED".

The Punjab government on Saturday announced that government will also provide financial assistance of Rs 1500 per acre to farmers who will be using advanced DSR Technique to monitor the groundwater table. Mann also said that “To promote the DSR technology, our government has also decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 1,500 per acre to farmers who adopt this water-saving method of cultivating paddy". 

Vinod Gupta, a Fazilka Mandi-based commission agent, said that “the demand for basmati hardly goes down. The MSP will act as a deterrent to several traders who have a monopoly on its trade and offer less to farmers to earn huge profits”.

According to research studies and suggested by experts basmati cultivation is much easier and more effective than paddy because it is grown in the monsoon season and completely depends on rainwater for its growth. It has also been revealed that basmati will enormously benefit the farmer by reducing the stubble burning or “slash or burnt” method.

To increase the area under cotton, which is another alternative to paddy, the government would ensure the timely release of water in the canals during the cotton-sowing period in April and May and provide subsidized seeds also. The state government has also declared a ban on 10 pesticides that may cause harmful effects on the basmati crop and they are not required for basmati crop cultivation.

Sources have also said that the government has further announced that they will brand and market Punjab’s produce for exports and provide a strong link to boost the economy.
