In response to the ethnic conflict that erupted in Manipur in May 2023, the State's agricultural department has formulated a crop compensation scheme valued at Rs 38.06 crore. The funding for this program, which addresses more than 5,127 hectares of severely affected farmlands identified in June 2023, is being entirely provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The compensation sum has been determined by assessing the average crop yields over the last three years in the districts impacted by the crisis, including areas where farming has become infeasible. The Deputy Commissioners in the affected regions will be responsible for verifying the affected farmers to establish the exact count of beneficiaries eligible for compensation.

The Manipur government's initiative is a welcome step to help farmers who have been hit hard by the ethnic violence. The conflict has forced many farmers to flee their homes and abandon their fields, leading to significant crop losses. The compensation package will provide much-needed relief to these farmers and help them to get back on their feet.

The farmers' organization Loumee Shinmee Apunba Lup (LOUSAL) has also conducted an independent survey, which estimates that a total of 9,719 hectares of agricultural fields in the valley may experience crop failure. This is because farmers are afraid to enter their paddy fields due to sporadic shooting by armed thugs from the lower foothills.

The Manipur Agriculture Commissioner RK Dinesh Singh has praised LOUSAL for its efforts and has stated that the department is working to address the crisis. He has also confirmed that the department has approached the MHA for funding a crop compensation package for the affected farmers.
