Maharashtra: Govt To Install 10,000 Rain-Measuring Devices To Get Correct Weather Data
This project will provide valuable information to farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector. With more accurate and timely weather information, farmers can make better decisions and take appropriate measures to protect their crops.

Maharashtra is set to install 10,000 rain-measuring devices across the state in order to provide accurate information about the weather in real time. Currently, the state has only 2,200 rainfall-measuring devices. Agriculture Commissioner Sunil Chavan said that one machine will be installed for four-gram panchayats, providing information about not only rainfall but also wind velocity and other aspects of weather.
A private company will be involved in the project, while the state government will provide land for it. The company will also be free to share the data with crop insurance companies.
The state’s minister Abdul Sattar announced the plan after a pre-Kharif season meeting. He said that the government will ensure that there is no shortage of urea, seeds, and other essentials. The state will witness 96% rainfall in the upcoming monsoon season, with no scarcity expected.
Additionally, the state will employ drones to spray nano urea. This initiative will involve at least 500gm of nano urea, which is an effective equivalent to 50kg of urea, mixed in water and sprayed with the help of drones. Drones will be provided at subsidised rates, and operators will be trained at Rahuri Agriculture University for 15 days.
Speaking about the losses faced by farmers due to unseasonal rains, Sattar said that nearly 70% of the crop loss survey has been completed. Once the rains stop in some parts of the state, the remaining survey will be completed in a week.
Overall, this project will provide valuable information to farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector. With more accurate and timely weather information, farmers can make better decisions and take appropriate measures to protect their crops.
The use of drones to spray nano urea is also an innovative solution that could reduce costs and improve efficiency in the application of fertilizers.
