In an exciting development showcasing the agricultural sector's eagerness to embrace technological advancements, farmers from Madhya Pradesh, India's agricultural powerhouse, are on the cusp of becoming drone pilots to revolutionize their farming practices. This innovative approach was discussed during a meeting between sugarcane growers and government officials, reflecting the growing synergy between farmers' aspirations and the administration's forward-thinking schemes.

Around 120 enthusiastic farmers have already submitted applications to the Madhya Pradesh government's Directorate of Agriculture Engineering, seeking permission to integrate drones into their farming processes. The government, in tandem with its vision for progress, is meticulously reviewing these applications to identify individuals who possess a drone pilot license issued by the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA). Those with existing licenses are set to receive an immediate green light for takeoff.

To facilitate this transformation, the government plans to subsidize both the procurement of drones, following central government norms, and the associated training costs. However, adherence to specific norms is imperative for utilizing drones in agricultural practices. Farmers aiming to purchase drones should hold a drone pilot license from DGCA and possess a valid passport, as emphasized by Pawan Singh Shyam, Joint Director of the Directorate of Agriculture Engineering.

"We are in the process of meticulously scrutinizing the applications. Once we identify farmers with drone pilot licenses, we will expedite the subsidy process. For those without licenses, we are committed to providing the necessary training," stated Pawan Singh Shyam.

The Directorate of Agriculture Engineering has solidified a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Udan Academy in Amethi, a self-governing body under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This partnership aims to train farmers in the intricate skills of drone operation. Training fees under the MoU have been subsidized at INR 30,000 per farmer, with the government pledging to cover half the cost. Experts from the academy will impart knowledge at the IT park in Bhopal, and discussions are ongoing with Anna University to establish a training facility in Jabalpur.

Upon successful completion of training and acquisition of drone pilot licenses, farmers will be eligible for subsidies to purchase drones. The Ministry of Agriculture extends varying levels of financial support to different categories of farmers. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) receive a subsidy of 75% up to INR 7.5 lakh, while women and SC/ST farmers are eligible for a 50% subsidy up to INR 5 lakh. Other farmers can avail of a 40% subsidy up to INR 54 lakh.

Pawan Singh Shyam emphasized, "We maintain continuous engagement with stakeholders. The demand for drone-assisted farming arose during discussions with sugarcane farmers. This demand aligns perfectly with our ongoing efforts. Drones hold immense potential in hi-tech farming, effectively distributing fertilizers and pesticides, saving time, labour, and enhancing efficiency—particularly beneficial for extensive farmlands."

As Madhya Pradesh's farming community takes flight towards technological excellence, the fusion of agricultural expertise and modern innovation is poised to cultivate a new era of sustainable and efficient farming practices.
