Krishi Jagran Honors Father of Indian Green Revolution, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, on World Food Day

M. C. Dominic, the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Krishi Jagran, and Shiny Dominic, the Managing Director, paid their respects to Dr. Swaminathan, exemplifying the widespread gratitude for his profound contributions in initiating the transformative movement of the Green Revolution in Indian agriculture.

Krishi Jagran hosted a special gathering of distinguished agricultural experts to pay tribute to the eminent Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, often referred to as the Father of the Indian Green Revolution, on World Food Day at the KJ Chaupal on October 16, 2023.

The tribute ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, daughter of Dr. Swaminathan, which served as a testament to the enduring legacy of a family dedicated to advancing agriculture and healthcare. The ceremony commenced with a solemn two-minute silence, a poignant moment in honor of the remarkable Dr. M. S. Swaminathan.

Subsequently, the Krishi Jagran team presented a heartfelt tribute video, celebrating Dr. M. S. Swaminathan's illustrious life, pioneering work, and unwavering commitment to food security and sustainable farming practices.

The tribute ceremony saw the presence of prominent agricultural experts, including Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority; Mr. Raju Kapoor, Director of Public and Industry Affairs at FMC Corporation; Dr. Moni M, Former Director General of the National Informatics Centre; and Dr. V. V. Sadamate, Former Advisor to Agriculture in the Government of India.

Tarun Shridhar, Former Union Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, read an article dedicated to honoring Dr. M. S. Swaminathan. Dr. Malavika Dadlani, Former Joint Director of Research and Head of the Division of Seed Science and Technology at IARI, recited a letter written by Dr. Swaminathan, portraying the enduring impact of his mentorship on her professional journey.

Despite the physical distance, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan joined the tribute ceremony for her father, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, through a Zoom call. Her presence resonated strongly, emphasizing the significance of the occasion and highlighting how Dr. Swaminathan's hard work transformed the agricultural landscape and ensured food security for millions.

Speaking at the tribute meeting, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan stated, "My father always cared deeply about the welfare of farmers. While we have achieved the Green Revolution, he emphasized the need for nutritional security and the safety of nutritious food." She added, "As a doctor, I wholeheartedly support his message. Even in the twilight of his life, he continued to advocate for the well-being of farmers and the people of the country. It is our collective responsibility to carry forward the messages and ideals he imparted."

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the October edition magazine, featuring Dr. M. S. Swaminathan on its cover. The magazine was launched in English, Tamil, and Malayalam editions.
