Karnataka Silk Marketing Board to Buy Cocoons Directly from Farmers, Directs Govt.
KSMB to directly purchase cocoons from sericulture farmers after a massive collapse in cocoon prices. This decision would help KSMB to stabilize the price of cocoons.
On 3rd June 2023, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture K. Venkatesh addressed and spoke about current issues that are faced by cocoon farmers. He told that to resolve the ongoing issue, Karnataka Silk Marketing Board (KSMB) has decided to purchase cocoons from the farmers which will bring stability in prices and improve farmer's living standards.
Karnataka Silk Marketing Board operates under the supervision of the Managing Director and General Manager, working in conjunction with the Department of Horticulture and Sericulture, Government of Karnataka. The primary focus of the company is to serve the interests of the Reelers, Weavers, and Twisters, which are vital segments of the silk community, alongside silkworm rearers.
As the largest licensed buyer, the company plays a crucial role in maintaining price stability within the silk market and preventing the formation of trader groups and cartels. The company's activities have facilitated job creation in the sericulture sector, contributing to employment opportunities in the state of Karnataka. Notably, tIt is the sole board actively involved in price stabilization through active participation in silk exchanges within the state.
Mr. Venkatesh, addressing a press conference in Mysuru, expressed concern over the sharp decline in cocoon prices in the past three to four months, which has severely impacted sericulture farmers.
