Karnal-Based IIWBR Advises Wheat Growers to Apply Light Irrigation to Wheat Crop

The IIWBR advisory came as for the past few days’ minimum temperatures in Punjab and Haryana have been continuously staying several degrees above normal. Farmers should apply light irrigation to the winter crop amid minimum temperatures lingering above normal.

The Karnal-based ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research has requested wheat growers to apply light irrigation to the winter crop amid minimum temperatures lingering above normal in Punjab and Haryana.

The advisory came as for the past few days’ minimum temperatures in Punjab and Haryana have been continuously staying several degrees above normal.

The wheat growers are left worried due to the rising temperature at this stage as they think it could negatively impact their crop yield.

The IIWBR advised farmers to give light irrigation to the wheat crop as per the requirement in its advisory.

The advisory also stated, during strong windy weather, irrigation should be stopped to avoid lodging that may result in loss of the crop.

In case of a rise in temperature, the farmers can irrigate their fields with sprinklers for 30 minutes in the afternoon who have the facility of the sprinkler.

The advisory said that the farmers having drip irrigation facilities need to make sure of proper moisture in the crop to avoid stress.

It further stated two sprays of potassium chloride 0.2 per cent at the jointing and heading stage may reduce the losses and will avoid the damage done by terminal heat in case of a sudden rise in temperature.

Farmers were further asked to regularly check their wheat crop for yellow rust disease.

It said to consult the agricultural expert at the nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra, research institute, or state agriculture department staff in case of yellow rust disease.
