Japanese Farmers Cultivate Unique "Lemon Melon" Fruit, a Perfect Summer Delight
The introduction of the lemon melon adds to Japan's illustrious luxury fruit market, which already boasts a range of extraordinary offerings.
A group of innovative farmers in Hokkaido has successfully developed a remarkable new fruit known as the "lemon melon." This extraordinary fruit, currently in limited production, combines the sweetness of a melon with a subtle tang reminiscent of a lemon.
Resembling a watermelon in shape but without the characteristic stripes, the lemon melon boasts a white interior. Its texture starts off crisp, resembling that of a pear, and gradually softens as it ripens, offering various ways to enjoy its delectable flavors.
According to reports, five Hokkaido farmers are cultivating the lemon melon, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Suntory Flowers, a renowned Japanese horticulture company. Over the past five years, Suntory Flowers meticulously developed this unique fruit from a melon variety originally imported from overseas. Countless experiments on cultivation techniques and harvesting times were conducted, resulting in the current iteration of the lemon melon, which is now available for sale.

This year, approximately 3,800 lemon melons are expected to be cultivated by Suntory Flowers. These exquisite fruits will be exclusively sold in Sapporo supermarkets until the end of August. Each lemon melon is priced at 3,220 yen ($22), reflecting its unique qualities and limited availability.
