It now estimates the country's sugar production at 340 lakh tonnes after accounting for the diversion of 45 lakh tonnes of sugar for ethanol production, a reduction of 25 lakh tonnes from its previous estimate of 365 lakh tonnes.
ISMA stated that it has revised the production estimate based on satellite images of harvested and balance areas, field visits, the current trend of yields and sugar recoveries achieved thus far, as well as expected yield/sugar recovery in the sugar season's balance period.
According to ISMA, the country's sugarcane planting area has increased by 6%. ISMA estimated sugar production at 365 lakh tonnes in October, after accounting for the diversion of 45 lakh tonnes to ethanol. ISMA revised the production estimate down to 340 lakh tonnes on Tuesday. "After diversion of 45 lakh tonnes to ethanol due to diversion of cane juice/syrup and B-molasses to ethanol, ISMA estimates sugar production in 2022-23 at around 340 lakh tonnes of sugar," ISMA said in a statement.
About ISMA
The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) is India's leading sugar organization. It acts as the nation's liaison between the executive branch and the sugar sector (both private and public sugar mills). The main objective is to make sure that the government's supportive and growth-oriented policies protect the operations and interests of both private and public sugar mills in the nation.
ISMA is dedicated to the improvement of sugarcane farmers in the country, and one of its primary goals is to protect the interests of cane farmers in the country, for whom sugarcane is their sole source of income. ISMA is working with the government to develop long-term policies that will ensure the interests of its main stakeholders—farmers, millers, and consumers—are sustained and protected against the industry's cyclical nature, ensuring growth.
