Innovative Farmers Embrace Solar-Powered Mini Tractor to Revolutionize Agriculture

As the agricultural sector grapples with labour shortages and a wave of young farmers joining its ranks, a wave of innovation is sweeping through the fields. In Siddavvanadurga village, the story of Channabasappa, a forward-thinking farmer and son of Shivanna, has captured the imagination of many. Channabasappa's adoption of solar-powered mini tractors has proven to be a resounding success, offering a fresh perspective on modern farming techniques. Traditionally, bulls were employed for tilling the land, but Channabasappa has shifted gears, opting for solar-powered machinery and thereby significantly reducing costs.

The solar energy-driven mini tractor has become a spectacle that draws public attention. Channabasappa employs this innovative tractor to cultivate a variety of crops, including ragi and little millet, which have a lower height profile. The mini solar-powered tractor operates seamlessly for an impressive eight hours on a full charge, seamlessly replacing the traditional use of bulls in land preparation.

The venture into this novel approach to farming was made possible through the support of the SELCO Foundation, an organization dedicated to sustainable energy solutions. The foundation stepped up by funding the solar tractor's cost, amounting to Rs 2.09 lakh, while Channabasappa contributed Rs 65,000 towards the equipment expenses. The compact and lightweight nature of the solar tractor allows it to manoeuvre effortlessly through different types of crops, showcasing its versatility.

Channabasappa expressed his perspective on this agricultural transformation, stating, "In a world where progress is evident across all sectors, agriculture should also evolve. Solar energy emerges as a viable alternative to fossil fuels for mechanizing agricultural processes."
