Indore- RVSKVV College Inaugurates Advanced Potato Aeroponics Unit
The Agriculture College at RVSKVV in Indore celebrated the inauguration of its pioneering potato aeroponics unit, employing soil-less cultivation techniques and tissue culture for precision and sustainability in potato farming.
The Agriculture College at Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (RVSKVV) marked the opening of its potato aeroponics unit this Wednesday. Aeroponics, an innovative method of growing plants without soil, includes hanging the roots in the air and feeding them with a mist rich in nutrients.
Bharat Singh, the head scientist of the project, emphasized the advanced strategy of employing potato seeds from a tissue culture system, ensuring accurate and efficient cultivation.
On this special occasion, RVSKVV Vice-Chancellor Arvind K Shukla emphasized the significance of this tissue culture approach for growing potatoes. Conventional methods often lead to viral infections affecting potato crops, which may go unnoticed until harvest. Shukla stressed the advantage of using tissue culture-derived seeds, ensuring virus-free potatoes, and providing seeds with an extended lifespan of 5-6 years. He believes this will greatly benefit farmers by improving productivity and sustainability.

Shukla pointed out that this particular potato aeroponics unit is the second of its kind, with the first one located in Gwalior. However, the newly launched unit at RVSKVV stands out for its focus on natural cultivation, using sunlight, air, and water to promote potato growth. This shift towards natural methods showcases the institution's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices.

While acknowledging the current high cost associated with the technique, Shukla highlighted the long-term benefits of seed durability, lasting 5-6 years. To address the cost challenge, a dedicated scientist has been appointed to manage and evaluate the associated costs of the unit. The institution aims to develop a comprehensive estimate for potato cultivation using this innovative technique, aligning with its commitment to balancing the initial investment with long-term advantages and potential cost-effectiveness.
