An Assamese farmer named Gauri Kanta Deka has been invited to share his knowledge of revolutionary farming methods by the Indian Agriculture Research Institute's centre for agricultural technology assessment and transfer in New Delhi.

The 74-year-old farmer, who has been involved in farming since he was a little child, has played a key role in putting new concepts into practice in the practical parts of production. He will receive a Certificate in appreciation of his unique agricultural efforts in addition to sharing his innovations and farming experiences with the nation's top farmers and agricultural scientists. He is this time's lone farmer chosen from Assam.

The Innovative Farmers Recognition for Pusa Krishi Vigyan Mela 2023, which will take place in New Delhi from March 2 to 4, 2023, will present him with the honor on March 4. He has already received numerous honors from the Department of Agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barpeta, and other groups at the district and state levels.

Throughout his early years, he continued working in the fields while his fellows attended school to receive a formal education. He completed his studies up to class V and focused all of his energy and research on agricultural endeavors, earning him a good reputation. His farms have evolved into locations where Agriculture University students can conduct field research. Many Assam Agricultural University students are actively working with Deka to obtain practical experience in the agricultural sector.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune, Deka described the fundamental techniques he uses in his farming, including washing the potatoes with water and drying them out in the sun before conserving the seeds. Although farmers cannot protect potato seeds from insects even when using chemical pesticides, he has succeeded without applying any.

He also produces and sells seedlings of horticultural plants through grafting, including premium mango and palm trees. Also, he produces insecticides at home with vermicompost and cow urine. The farmer grows and sells paddy, potatoes, melons, strawberries, palm, cabbage, and cabbage seedlings in the market.

His farm has cashew nuts, apple trees, dragon fruit, pears, mangoes, and the valuable cocoa fruit used to make chocolate, in addition to fish farming in two large ponds. He has also received the Best Farmer in the District award and has participated in agricultural exhibitions.

The Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha honored him with the Luitparia Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He was also given Lifetime Contribution Recognition by the Barpeta KVK. He was once recognized for displaying brinjal weighing 2kg and 800 grams. He also served on the Agricultural Marketing Board.

Up to 70 bighas of land have been leased by Deka, and his farming operations are dispersed across 22 bighas. He once produced 35 kg of pumpkin and cabbage which each weighed 13 kg and 300 grams. He was welcomed to Tarun Gogoi's home and encouraged by the then-chief minister.
