The Union Agriculture Ministry in India has set a record target of 3,320 lakh tonnes of foodgrain production for the year 2023-24. This is an increase from the previous year's production of 3,235 lakh tonnes. The target for the production of pulses has been set at 292.5 lakh tonnes, while oilseeds production will be increased to 440 lakh tonnes.

Millet production has been set at 170 lakh tonnes. The government aims to increase crop area, crop diversification, and productivity enhancement through the adoption of higher-yield seeds and suitable agronomic practices.

The country has been able to maintain an increasing trend in food grain production since 2015-16, according to Manoj Ahuja, the Secretary at Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ministry. The government has taken measures to augment crop and livestock productivity, ensure farmers' certainty of returns through Minimum Support Price, promote crop diversification, and facilitate credit availability, mechanization, and boost horticulture and organic farming.

As a result, agriculture exports have increased by 19.99% in 2021-22, touching a historic high growth.

The National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign 2023-24 was inaugurated by Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar. The conference aimed to review and assess the crop performance during the preceding crop seasons and fix crop-wise targets for the Kharif season. During the conference, detailed presentations were made on the status of fertilizer supply.

Kharif crops, such as rice, maize, and soybean, are typically sown between May and July and harvested from October to November, dependent on rainfall. In the previous year, record production of rice, maize, gram, pulses, rapeseed and mustard, oilseeds, and sugarcane was estimated.
