The first public sector beekeeping equipment manufacturing unit in India will be launched today at Kalavamkodam, near Cherthala, Kerala. The facility, which was set up at a cost of ₹25 lakh, will be inaugurated by Agriculture Minister P. Prasad.

The unit will provide high-quality beekeeping equipment to bee farmers at reasonable rates. This pioneering initiative, operating under the aegis of the Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation (Horticorp), aims to boost the beekeeping industry and uplift the livelihoods of beekeepers across the region.

Scheduled for inauguration at 2 p.m. today, the event will be graced by Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, signifying the government's commitment to the apiculture sector's growth.

This state-of-the-art facility will focus on producing a range of essential beekeeping equipment in its initial phase. These items include beehives, smokers, comb honey cutters, hive stands, and more, all of which are poised to meet the highest standards of quality while remaining accessible to bee farmers through reasonable pricing.

Notably, Horticorp has outlined an ambitious expansion plan for the unit's second phase. Manufacture of honey-processing machines, storing drums, collection traps, vending machines, and implements for making value-added products and the hygienic collection of honey. This strategic vision emphasizes the long-term commitment to supporting the beekeeping community and enhancing the beekeeping industry's contribution to the economy.

The manufacturing unit, with a total investment of ₹25 lakh, comprises a grant of ₹19 lakh from the Union government and Horticorp's financial backing.

The inauguration of this remarkable manufacturing unit, a two-day State-level seminar on beekeeping will take place at Cherthala Town Hall. The seminar will feature expert sessions led by renowned institutions and organizations such as the Central Bee Research and Training Institute in Pune, the National Dairy Development Board, Kerala Agricultural University, Tamil Nadu Agriculture Department, and the Government Ayurveda Hospital.

These sessions will serve as a knowledge-sharing platform for beekeepers and enthusiasts, fostering innovation and sustainability in the beekeeping sector.
