India's national weather agency recently celebrated its 150th foundation day by unveiling the latest version of its homegrown mobile app. The Mausam Gram service, accessible through the India Meteorology Department’s Mausam app, promises to provide comprehensive weather information and forecasts across the country, including oceanic areas. This milestone is not just about meteorology but also marks a new era for farmers, offering them vital information for better decision-making.

Emphasizing inclusivity, the app, available in English, Hindi, and 12 regional languages, aims to empower every household with precise weather forecasts. The innovative Panchayat Mausam Seva, an offshoot of the app, focuses specifically on farmers, delivering weather alerts and guidance tailored to agricultural activities. This move signifies a modernized approach to agrometeorology services, aligning with the India Meteorology Department's commitment to supporting farmers and mitigating crop losses due to unpredictable weather.

Notable milestones include aviation weather forecasts in 1911, agrometeorology services in 1945, storm surge warnings in 1977, and more recent additions like air quality forecasts in 2018 and urban meteorological services in 2020.

As the Mausam app enters this new phase, its focus on farmers through the Panchayat Mausam Seva signifies a progressive approach to leveraging technology to benefit the agricultural sector. The amalgamation of tradition and innovation is evident in the IMD's journey, reflecting its commitment to providing accurate and timely weather information for the betterment of society.
