The ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (RS) Modipuram recently hosted a 'National Agri-drone Workshop-cum-Field Day' at CPRI, Modipuram, Meerut. The primary objective of the program was to raise awareness and share knowledge about the transformative potential of agri-drone technologies with various agricultural communities.

The Government of India has taken a significant step forward in endorsing agri-drone usage by issuing comprehensive guidelines and regulations. These are overseen by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) through its 'Digital Sky Website.' The future outlook for agri-drone technology, especially in potato-based cropping systems, appears highly promising.

Agri-drones are emerging as a revolutionary solution that minimizes direct contact between farm workers and agro-chemicals, consequently reducing potential health risks. These drones exhibit efficiency on both small-scale (400m²) and large farms, adeptly navigating diverse terrains, plant canopies, and challenging weather conditions such as heavy rainfall or extreme temperatures.

Utilizing precise GPS measurements of field areas, agri-drones ensure accurate weighing and application of agro-chemicals in line with recommendations. This not only prevents misuse but also results in substantial resource savings, including agro-chemicals, water, and time. The technology's potential extends to future applications, including precise seed sowing and nutrient application under varied field conditions. This addresses labour shortages in farming, creating employment opportunities in rural areas.

Notably, agri-drones operate on battery power, making them environmentally friendly and cost-effective by reducing reliance on petroleum products. The DGCA, managing regulations for agri-drone use, further ensures the eco-friendly aspect through its oversight on the 'Digital Sky Website.'
