On April 21st, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University hosted an awareness programme to commemorate National Public Relations Day. The program's goal was to encourage millet consumption among the general public and the media.

During the event, Prof HK Chaudhary, Vice Chancellor, emphasized the importance of promoting millets and encouraged both scientists and entrepreneurs to take part. He asked young entrepreneurs to help farmers secure greater pricing for millet-based products by marketing them as healthier food options in urban areas.

Dr. SP Dixit, Director of Studies, addressed current research on various millets like ragi, cheena, swank, jowar, and bajra. These millet types were chosen for their ease of growth and resistance to diseases and pests.

According to Dr. Ranjna Verma and Dr. Anupama Sandal, millets are a great source of carbohydrates, micronutrients, and soluble fibers that have been found to aid in the management of conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight. Furthermore, they stated that 35 standardized millet products would be linked to diverse businesses soon.

The 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023) in March 2021, with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) acting as the main agency responsible for commemorating the Year in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders. Millets, which may thrive on dry soil with few inputs, are climate change adaptable and can be a desirable choice for countries aiming to increase self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imported cereal grains.

The International Year of Millets provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to raise public awareness and policy attention on millets' nutritional and health benefits, as well as their adaptation to demanding and changing climatic conditions. Furthermore, this year will promote the sustainable production of millets and highlight their potential to generate new and sustainable market opportunities for producers and consumers alike.
