With the sugarcane crushing season approaching, farmers in Haryana are demanding a significant increase in the State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane. Farmer unions in the state have been fervently advocating for a substantial raise, pushing for a SAP of ₹450 per quintal, up from the current ₹372.

On Friday, a group of farmers from the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU Tikait) organized a protest in Panchkula and presented a memorandum to the director of agriculture, demanding an increase in the SAP.

Haryana BKU President Ratan Mann confirmed that they have requested an SAP of ₹450 per quintal and received assurance from the director of agriculture that he would bring the matter before the chief minister.

In case the government fails to address the SAP hike by November 1, they plan to raise the issue during Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Karnal on November 2.

The demand for a higher SAP comes in the wake of last year's farmer protests, which led to the disruption of sugarcane supply to sugar mills and the suspension of crushing operations for nearly a week. The delay in the SAP announcement has raised valid concerns among farmers, who argue that this decision should have been made well in advance of the crushing season.

The standoff between the Haryana government and BKU (Charuni) ended on January 26 when the government increased the SAP by ₹10 per quintal, setting it at ₹372.

Director of Agriculture, Narhari Bangar, affirmed that the deliberation on the sugarcane SAP decision has not taken place as of Friday, but he did acknowledge the farmers' submission of their demand through a memorandum.
