The G20 agricultural working group's three-day meeting, which ended on Friday, saw delegates engaging in discussions around sustainable agriculture, food security, and nutrition, with a climate-smart approach being a key focus.

The meeting, which took place in Chandigarh, had representation from 19 member countries, 10 invited countries, and 10 international organizations. The second agricultural deputies meeting (ADM) concluded with two back-to-back sessions aimed at drafting a communiqué by the G20 member countries, which involved extensive deliberations.

During the session, representatives from other invited countries and international organizations expressed their opinions and contributed to an inclusive discussion on the drafting of the communiqué.

An official statement released later stated that the aim was to achieve agreements on focus areas such as food security and nutrition, climate-smart agriculture, inclusive agricultural value chains, and digitalization for agricultural transformation.

Following the session, Manoj Ahuja, the secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, expressed his hope that the discussion on the draft communiqué and the deliberations would lead to such agreements.

The purpose of the second ADM is to establish a consensus on how to advance the growth of the agriculture sector, and the outcome will serve as a roadmap for tackling the challenges and opportunities presented by the global agriculture landscape.

Following the meeting, the delegates visited the historical Yadavindra Gardens located in Pinjore, Haryana, according to a statement.

India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1, 2022, which is an intergovernmental forum consisting of the world's major developed and developing economies, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union (EU).
