Former Chief Justice of India, P. Sathasivam Becomes Voice of Farmers at KJ Chaupal

In a unique convergence of law and agriculture, P. Sathasivam, the former Chief Justice of India, graced the stage as the chief guest at Krishi Jagran's KJ Chaupal meeting. Hailing from a farming background himself, Former Justice Sathasivam's remarkable legal career and commitment to addressing agricultural challenges positioned him as a revered guide and inspiration for the farming community.
MC Dominic, the Founder of Krishi Jagran, praised Shri Sathasivam's contributions to the agriculture industry and highlighted his farming background. Shri P. Sathasivam, who hails from a farming family, now tends to his own farming fields, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father.
Having had a dynamic career, Shri P. Sathasivam served as the 40th Chief Justice of India for a nine-month tenure. During his time, he made significant judgments, including the Reliance gas case and the 1993 Mumbai Bomb Blast case. He also presided over the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Known for his commitment to social causes, he advocated for the rights of disabled persons and played a pivotal role in increasing their representation and accessibility. He introduced the term "specially-abled" and promoted the inclusion of ramps and elevators in government buildings.

After concluding his term as Governor of Kerala, he embarked on a farming journey in his native village. He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers, such as the lack of profitability and middlemen exploiting their produce.
Shri Sathasivam emphasized the importance of minimum support prices, access to good seeds and fertilizers, subsidized machinery, and systematic methods of storing surplus produce. He also urged the government to raise awareness about the various schemes available to farmers and provide assistance in their mother tongue.
In his efforts to advocate for farmers, he expressed his readiness to approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had previously requested him to serve as Kerala Governor. He suggested the publication of a booklet in regional languages, containing information about the government's agricultural schemes, and its door-to-door distribution among farmers. The former CJI concluded by addressing the labor shortage in agriculture and the need to attract youth to the sector.
The esteemed former Chief Justice's insights shed light on the challenges faced by farmers and the measures required to uplift the agricultural industry. His valuable perspective, combined with his personal commitment to farming, contributes to a deeper understanding of the plight of farmers in India and the potential solutions that lie ahead.
