FICCI and Corteva Agriscience Hosts Event on Millet Roadmap for Rajasthan

A millet roadmap -“Leveraging Rajasthan’s Millet Heritage” was being conducted by FICCI in partnership with Corteva Agriscience for Rajasthan Government. Several people including renowned scientists, farmers, and entrepreneurs attended the event.

Recently a millet Conclave called “Leveraging Rajasthan’s Millet Heritage” was organized by FICCI in collaboration with Corteva Agriscience in Jaipur. Corteva Agriscience, as task force chair, will lead the Rajasthan government's Millet Roadmap project to hasten the expansion of the millet industry. The Rajasthan government's plan to speed up the expansion of the millet sector.

The major goals were to highlight Rajasthan's advantages in millet production and to encourage discussion among various stakeholders in order to develop a future roadmap for making Rajasthan a well-known millet hub.

There were many attendees, including representatives from the agricultural, hotel, and tourism industries, lawmakers, illustrious scientists from prestigious research institutes, progressive farmers, and academia. The panelists discussed using a holistic and multifaceted approach to address important problems in the millet value chain and to spark a fruitful collaboration.

Shreya Guha, Principal Secretary, Government of Rajasthan said that “ Rajasthan is one of the most significant regions with a diverse range of millets offered in several zones, which should be promoted as a culinary destination. Also, there are ample opportunities to leverage millets in the tourism industry”.

She also added that “ the startups and entrepreneurs can also develop innovative recipes and products using millet. They can manufacture products targeting lactating women, pregnant women, etc. Millets are in demand and an integral part of Rajasthan’s traditional diet, and further, it’s the leading producer of bajra. Also, Millets are very easy to grow requiring less amount of water, and making beneficial products for the country.”

Jitendra Joshi, Chairman, of the FICCI Task Force on Millets & Director – of Seeds, Corteva Agriscience – South Asia told that  “ Rajasthan being the largest producer of millet holds the power to successfully organize initiatives in the International Year of Millets 2023.

Corteva's efforts in the millet value chain, according to the seed business, "include offering hybrid millet seeds that enhance their existing stress resistance and produce 15-20% higher yield, provide disease resistance, and ultimately increase farmer productivity and profitability."

The breeding programs for summer millets, rainy millets, and mustard are all managed by Corteva's India Research Centre in Jaipur. Corteva seeks to work with farmers through partner programs like "Pravakta," empowering them as ambassadors to assist in educating other farmers and paving the path for a better future by educating and training them in all crop management practices and new hybrids. Additionally, the Antrashtriya Bajra Mahotsav, which is celebrated all throughout the state, strives to highlight for farmers and consumers the ecological advantages and nutritional value of millets.

The company said that the company is trying to create awareness and literate the farmer community especially the millet farmers to adapt modified technology solutions. This would help the farmers to increase their productivity and profitability.
