Farmers in Coastal Odisha Urged to Harvest Crops Ahead of Low-Intensity Cyclonic Storm on Tuesday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to farmers in coastal Odisha, urging them to hasten the harvest of matured paddy crops due to the approaching low-intensity cyclonic storm. According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, the depression currently hovering over the Bay of Bengal is expected to transform into a low-intensity cyclonic storm by October 24.

The depression is currently centered approximately 610 kilometers south of Odisha's Paradip, with its projected path taking it toward the Bangladesh-West Bengal coasts over the following three days. While there is a possibility of a cyclonic storm forming, it is likely to be a relatively weak system with marginal impact.

Weather scientist Umashankar Dash of the Regional Meteorological Centre explained that the cyclonic system is expected to be around 200 kilometers from the state's coast. This means that coastal Odisha is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall as the storm approaches.

In response to the imminent weather conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until October 25, as rough sea conditions are anticipated. This precaution is aimed at ensuring the safety of those involved in coastal fishing activities.

For farmers, the warning to harvest matured paddy crops by October 23 is crucial. The cyclonic system's influence is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall to various places in coastal Odisha. On October 23, some locations may receive light to moderate rainfall, with more widespread rainfall anticipated on October 24 and 25.
