Farmers Demand Higher MSP for Pigeon Peas to Cope with Rising Production Costs

Farmers urges government to increase the MSP of Tur. MSP of Pigeon pea (Tur) is Rs 6600/quintal much lower than urad of Rs 7755/quintal. India plants to bring more imports of Tur and Urad as the production rate is truly low.

Pulse traders and processors have asked the government to raise the minimum support price (MSP) for pigeon peas (tur dal) in order to entice farmers to produce the crop.

"As the true production performance seemed low, it has immensely resulted in heavier prices. Farmers' crop selection would be aided by government encouragement,” according to Suresh Agrawal, president of the Dal Mill Association.

Even though the costs have now decreased, the federal government created a committee to monitor the situation after the price of tur and urad increased 8–10% last month.

Tur is the least favored legume for farmers, according to Agrawal, who also noted that it requires more time in the field than moong and other pulses. Tur's MSP is likewise less expensive per quintal than Moong's, at Rs. 6600 as opposed to Rs. 7755 for Moong.

Given that domestic production is anticipated to decline, India has already made the decision to import more tur dal (pigeon peas) during the marketing year 2023–2024 in order to meet domestic demand.

The period from December to November is Tur's marketing year.

Most of the countries that export tur are in East Africa and Myanmar. According to a notification, the Center had already extended the import of tur and urad pulses under the "free" category for a further year, until March 31, 2024.
