The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and WayCool Foods, a Chennai-based food and agri-tech platform, have signed an agreement to 'digitise the Package of Practices' (PoP) of key crops under the Crop Production Guide 2020.
Farmers will be able to access information on PoPs for 133 crops via the Outgrow mobile app, WayCool's farmer engagement arm.
The collaboration will provide Tamil Nadu Agricultural University faculty members as resource people to train farmers and open grounds for organic farming research at the Outgrow Agriculture Research Station (OARS). Additionally, WayCool will give university students the chance to take part in real-world projects, arrange field trips to the OARS facility, and facilitate internships and job placements, all of which will help them on their path to entrepreneurship.
"We established the university with the vision of promoting scientific agriculture and allied sectors to farmers and agri-based industries," said Honourable VC Dr. Geethalakshmi Vellingiri of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. “Our partnership with WayCool is in line with our shared vision and objectives of boosting farm productivity and profitability while preserving rural livelihood and environmental safety. We are also excited to collaborate with the agro-player because our students will gain exposure, improved skills, and better opportunities. We are delighted to assist the company in transforming the agricultural sector and adding value to the Indian economy through its demand-based supply chain module. We would also be delighted to contribute to capacity building through technical assistance funds, Climate Funds, and Regenerative Agriculture, as well as pre-harvest and post-harvest aspects of farm produce handling."
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Sanjay Dasari, Co-founder, WayCool Foods, said, "It is now more important than ever for India to adopt proper agricultural practices that result in the production of high-quality food on a large scale. This has accelerated the transition to precision farming, giving farmers greater control over their agricultural practices. More than ever, there is a need to develop a robust and standardized set of practices while also working with farmers to ensure their adoption. We are pleased to collaborate with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, which will assist us in our efforts to make natural precision farming accessible and profitable."
Adding to this, Mr. N Sendhil Kumar, Head - Outgrow & Farmer Engagement, WayCool Foods, said, " In our efforts to revolutionize the agri-space and holistically empower farmers, this partnership marks another significant turning point. The Crop Production Guide 2020 will be critical in assisting farmers throughout Tamil Nadu in identifying important crop varieties, farm implements, and technologies that will suit the current climate change scenario and accustom their agricultural techniques accordingly. Furthermore, the digitization of TNAU PoPs will provide them with easy access to information while also expanding their knowledge base through videos. We are thrilled to have TNAU on board and are confident that this MoU will help us make significant progress in the sector."
